What do history's most notorious despots have in common with many of the flag-waving, patriotic politicians of our day? Both groups rise to power through the exploitation of fear. Sometimes the fear derives from a pre-existing threat. At other times, crises are created or intensified to invoke a sense of panic and anxiety where none previously existed.

This pattern is as predictable as it is destructive. The end result is the same a loss of liberty. Policies that are costly, oppressive, and harmful are supported by people who abandon any interest in freedom or personal responsibility in hopes of feeling safe.

Manufactured fear, with its negative impact on liberty, is a societal plague. There have been widespread casualties. We need an antidote. Feardom offers its readers a much-needed immunization.

This was a really good read. It was short and to the point and got me thinking about a lot of things. I am more conservative than I am liberal so it was probably good for me to read about examples of conservatives using the same fear tactics that liberals use. My only beef with the book is that it does not present many concrete ideas of what to do to correct the problems that we have with these fear tactics being used in our government. I know that there aren't easy solutions and there may not really be any viable solutions, but I still was wishing there were more ideas about what to do to combat it. I finished the book with a feeling of "Yes, so now what?" I agreed with many of the points made in the book, which made me want to do something about it, but mostly it left me feeling depressed and thinking that things will never change. Anyway, a great, eye-opening book that will help you see through all the fear tactics used by politicians.

Good and educational!
Well written by an author that has some great insight out our political underpinnings today.
This book is a wonderful exploration on how media and politicians exploit the fear of the public for their own purposes. I highly recommend this book to everyone of all political persuasions!
Very good explanation of the techniques used to convince us that politicians know what they are talking about and how much they care about their constituents. That is the lies they tell us.
I got this as a freebie and read it in one sitting today. It's informative and well written and I found myself learning more about how our political system is currently working. I recommend this for any who are concerned about the world today and what they can do to make things better.
Well written and timely.
Mr.Boyack has written, albeit, too short a recipe for the state to assume power without a fight.
The recent Sony hack show how it's done. The state ,with the FBI leading the way assured us this was done by N. Korea. After a no bite fishing expedition it goes to page 5. Meanwhile the NSA, CIA etc. all increase their power.
A well written fast pace, it draws you in and compels you to think.
Feardom is probably the only book that addresses the willingness of Americans to sacrifice their liberty for a supposed increase in security, all due to heightened fear. It is the emotional aspect of this treatise that distinguishes it from other, purely analytical works. Politicians cunningly use fear as a tool to enhance their power. As is well known, in times of crisis Americans flock to their political leaders to keep them safe. Because politics is all about power and control, politicians have manufactured crises in "false flag" incidents, or wildly blown any dangers out of all proportion. There is always a new panic being created somewhere. The more fear generated, the more power is given to the State. As Randolph Bourne coined, war is the health of the state--to which we might add the manipulation of economic fears, the desire to feel safe, and fear of others.

What can be done? Although Boyack recommends love, perhaps a more practical recommendation is to stop being afraid and stop petitioning politicians to be afraid on your behalf. As the author himself states, develop a healthy skepticism of those in power, extend trust only to those who have proven worthy of it, consume a large amount of diverse information, tell the truth to others, and live by the Golden Rule. This book makes a great contribution to ending fear.

Feardom delves into the consequences of unreasonable fear as the building blocks of our emerging National Security state, including weaponized drones, universal surveillance, warrantless search, and indefinite detention without charge or trial. As a perfect compliment to Suicide Pact, for a dramatization of what the new national security state looks and feels like in the near future, read John Brown's State of Terror ( hyperlink).
